Report of the Independent Police Oversight Review

Date: April 6, 2017

This afternoon, OPPA President Rob Jamieson and Vice-President Chris Hoffman attended the release of the highly anticipated “Report of the Independent Police Oversight Review” in Toronto.

From the moment this review was announced last year, your Association has been very active in advocating for changes to police oversight – changes that strike a balance between the rights of our membership and the need for transparency that the citizens of Ontario have called for.

Over the past year, we have worked tirelessly with all stakeholders to ensure that our members have a voice in changes which have a direct impact on the duties they perform. The release of today’s report does not signal an end to our advocacy. Our messaging to stakeholders will continue so that those entrusted to enact legislation in this province have a complete perspective on policing related issues. As the recommendations from today’s report are implemented and further changes to the Police Services Act are contemplated, the voice of our front line must be heard now, more than ever.

We are carefully reviewing all of Mr. Justice Tulloch’s 129 recommendations and will offer further commentary on the implications of this report in the coming days.

Until then, the Board of Directors would like to thank Mr. Justice Tulloch for his professionalism in conducting a thorough review of police oversight in Ontario.

Yours truly,

President Rob Jamieson & the Board of Directors
Ontario Provincial Police Association
