The 4th Annual Wrapped in Courage Campaign is on now and we invite you to purchase and wear a purple scarf in recognition of Woman Abuse Prevention Month. Details on this campaign are provided in the OAITH media release below.

For Immediate Release: Wrapping Ontario in Courage for Woman Abuse Prevention Month
November 1st 2016: Ontario Association of Interval and Transition Houses is calling on all Ontarians to purchase a purple scarf during Woman Abuse Prevention Month for the 4th Annual Wrapped in Courage Campaign. Scarves can be purchased from your local Woman’s Shelter. We are proud to announce that the Ontario Nurses’ Association and Talk4Healing are our Provincial Sponsors for a second year.

Wrapped in Courage: Women Shelters and community organizations across the province are engaging with their communities to address the overlooked issue of Woman Abuse in Ontario. Throughout the month of November, we are inviting everyone in Ontario to show their support by wearing a purple scarf to let women and their children know they are not alone. The courage of a woman alone is not enough. It takes the commitment and support of an entire community to end violence against all women.

Quick Facts:
  • Statistics Canada (2015) In 2013, the rate of intimate partner homicide was 4.5 times higher for female victims
  • Ministry of Community and Social Services (2014-2015) 125 Housing Providers delivered services to approximately 20,280 women fleeing violence and abuse
  • Domestic Violence Death Review Committee (2015) Reviewed domestic violence related homicides between 2002-2014.  For the cases reviewed in 2014, 90% of domestic violence homicide victims in Ontario were female.
  • Ministry of Community and Social Services (2014-2015) 43,580 women and 4,460 children accessed VAW counselling services across Ontario

Shelters in Ontario Need Your Support:

For nearly 40 years the Ontario Association of Interval and Transition Houses has been supporting Women Shelters across the province to provide safe housing, counseling, legal and outreach support services to assist women to live their lives free from violence.  We need to work together to eliminate all forms of violence for all women and children in Ontario.  Your support of Women’s Shelter Services is essential in making that happen.
