2010 NHL HOCKEY DREAM DRAW
DRAW DATE: FEBRUARY 2010
July 21, 2009
The Hockey Draw is a tried and proven concept that has successfully generated funds for drug prevention for over a decade. The program is now poised to expand to include interested minor hockey programs. In my opinion, as a former NHL goaltender and an active OPP officer, playing hockey is the original drug prevention program in Canada. Hockey has always been and will continue to be a positive alternative to drugs and violence for all who play.
The NHL Alumni Hockey Dream Draw will build a lasting legacy of much needed renewable support for minor hockey programs and families across Canada for years to come. It is our intention to develop positive partnerships, which will help support and grow the game of hockey at the grass roots level.

OPP ASSOCIATION & ONTARIO GOVERNMENT CONSULTATIONS
August 22, 2008
Earlier this week the OPP Association participated in consultations with the Ontario Government regarding bargaining structure and other related items. Representatives from other Ontario Public Service (OPS) bargaining agents were also present; OPSEU, AMAPCEO and PEGO for a facilitated discussion on ways of reforming the labour relations framework.
These consultations are yet another indicator of the excellent working relationship that the OPP Association has developed with the Ontario Government. This provides a great opportunity for us to address a number of long standing issues of importance to our Association.
The OPP Association continues to concentrate on protecting and enhancing the interests of the hard working men and women who uphold safety and security across the province of Ontario. These consultations were viewed as a promising opportunity for us to achieve additional benefits for our members.
Regards, Karl Walsh President OPP Association

OPPA SUPPORTS WINNIPEG PETITION
May 15, 2008
In December of 2006, members of the Winnipeg Police Service street crimes unit were executing a narcotics search warrant. During the course of the execution of the warrant, the male suspect armed himself with a shotgun and fired at the officers, wounding three. Two of the officers are still recovering from their injuries and have undergone extensive surgeries and rehabilitation. The male suspect, despite numerous charges stemming from the incident, was granted bail and in the opinion of many of our members was given considerable freedom that was unwarranted given the scope of the charges. The wives of the involved members channeled their immense frustration into an online petition calling for maximum penalties for violent offenders. The online petition is set to expire in June of this year, so time is of the essence. Please join us and show your support by signing the Winnipeg peition so we can demonstrate to our law makers that there must be definitive changes in the judicial system.

GREAT CANADIAN HEAD SHAVE
IN SUPPORT OF THE TERRY FOX FOUNDATION
APRIL 9, 2008
The Terry Fox Foundation is inviting all firefighters, police, RCMP and EMS across Canada to take part in our second annual "Great Canadian Head Shave" for cancer research on Friday, September 12, 2008.
This would be a true gathering of Canadian heroes for Terry Fox. Last year, the event raised $1 million and we had strong support from the fire departments in Sylvan Lake-AB, Niagara Falls-ON, Sackville-NB and Victoria-BC, as well as some individual firefighters in Calgary, Edmonton and other locations. Terry's entire family took part by having their heads shaved. All funds raised go to the Terry Fox Foundation and the new Terry Fox Research Institute which was just launched in October, 2007.

THANK YOU TO THE PRIME MINISTER
CHRIS GARRETT CONSIDERED FOR THE CROSS OF VALOUR
Cobourg Constable Chris Garrett was a hero and now, thanks to a country-wide team effort that included police associations, politicians, the public, the media, and the outstanding support from Ontario Provincial Police Association members, he will be considered for the Cross of Valour.
Leadership was needed and the OPP Association is pleased that Prime Minister Stephen Harper stepped forward this week to provide that leadership by announcing that the two-year deadline will be amended to accommodate cases such as this.
It was the right decision. We hope this announcement will provide some comfort to Chris’ family and also recognize the extraordinary actions of other heroes like Chris in the future.
As Rick Bartolucci, Ontario Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services, said: Constable Garrett was a brave officer and a pillar of his community. There should be no time limit on our recognition of his sacrifice.

OPP ASSOCIATION CONGRATULATES ERIN ROY
OLYMPIC TORCH RUN DEDICATION TO THE LATE ROB PLUNKETT
Erin Roy’s dream has been fulfilled! She will be carrying the torch for the 2008 Olympics Games in Beijing in honour of her late uncle, Constable Rob Plunkett of the York Regional Police Service, who was killed in the line of duty on August 2, 2007.
Erin received the highest number of votes in an online contest, taking first place where she won the opportunity of a life time to carry the Olympic torch in Beijing in June 2008. She will run a 400-metre leg of the relay as the torch makes its way to Beijing.
Rob was actively involved with the Special Olympics Ontario Provincial Games and held the position of Chairman in the year 2000. He was also actively involved with the Law Enforcement Torch Run for 15 years.
Erin’s victory will fulfill her dream to honour of the legacy of a man that she admired greatly and is a true testament of the pride and love shared by one family.

Support for Cst Garrett - Medal Of Valour
OPPA Supports Medal of Valour for Cst. Chris Garrett - Cobourg Police Service
18/11/2007
The OPPA Board of Directors are bringing the above petition to your attention.
Cst. Chris Garrett of the Cobourg Police Service was murdered on May 18th 2004 while on duty by then 18 year old Troy Davey. Garrett was responding to a robbery call and although he had his throat slashed by the accused, he managed to wound Davey with his service pistol.
His nomination for the Medal of Valour was delayed due to the trial of the accused in the murder case. The current rule is that the nomination has to be made within a two year time frame.
This worthy petition was authored by Eric Spagnolo (a colleague of Cst. Garrett) and simply asks for the ability of an extension of the two year in the case of an officer killed in the line of duty, where an earlier nomination may affect any criminal proceedings.
President Walsh has also requested this topic be discussed at the upcoming Canadian Police Association meeting on the 25th of November 2007 with a view to securing National support..
We would encourage you all to sign this petition and support this worthy effort being undertaken in the memory of Cst. Garrett and to assist those who this may affect in the future.

About the OPPA and History of the OPPA
Welcome to the Ontario Provincial Police Association (OPPA) web site.
The OPPA represents all civilian and non-commissioned uniform members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) on labour and contractual issues. Employees of the OPP holding the rank of Inspector and other senior supervisory roles are represented by the Commissioned Officers Associations (COA).
There are approximately 5,579 uniform members and 2,626 civilian members who belong to the Association.
The OPPA was officially incorporated as a non-profit organization on March 3, 1954. Throughout its existence the OPPA's philosophy has been "members serving members” and to advance the interests of its members in every manner.
While collective bargaining and labour contract administration are a priority for the Association, an equally important role for the Association is to promote a healthy and safe work environment for all members.
The Association, the largest single Police Association of its kind in Canada, also presents policy briefs and lobbies Municipal, Provincial and Federal Governments to ensure the voice of front-line members is heard.
