As a member of the Ontario Fire Marshals Office, this is very truly a sad and tragic reminder of how precious our lives and those of our families are. I know Laurie's brother is a Firefighter in North Bay, so along with the Police services across the country, the fire service too mourns with this tragic loss. Our thoughts and prayers are most certainly with you all.

It saddens me to read in today's paper that Laurie is not expected to pull through. I certainly have very mixed emtions: on one hand I'm glad for her. She doesn't have to face the trama of losing her family. On the other hand,I'm sad that such a beautiful, intelligent, police officer, mom and wife will be missed by so many. I had the pleasure of having Laurie on my morning radio show numerous times. I will personally miss her bright smile, bubbly personality and entertaining sense of humour. Don Martin 104.7 Heart FM

I am remembering my first boss at O.P.P., Identification Services, Corporal Jim Smith who died in the line of duty on Dec. 11, 1968. It is hard to believe it has been forty years since that fateful day. Cpl. Smith was my boss for only four months at GHQ in Toronto until he was transferred to Peterborough Detachment. Cpl. Smith made an impression on me for his courteous way and friendly manner and I will never forget his smile.

SIncerest condolences to family and colleagues of PC Laurie Hawkins on her family's passing and best wishes to her on recovery. As members of the emergency services family, we all know we routinely deal with what the general public considers unfathomable. We know it affects us but not generally as intensely as when it happens to one of our own or someone we know personally. Not meaning to be critical of the Hawkins family but let's not let their tragedy repeat itself. We know oversights, such as lack of heating equipment maintenance and properly installed, working smoke / CO detectors, can have such catastrophic consequences...like seatbelts, or so many other examples. It's so much easier to prevent these tragedies than recover from the oversight. Unfortunately, even we need a reminder on occassion - there is never a more expensive one, on so many levels, than ones such as this.

I would be interested in Family and Friends of Police Officers who are/have/and will be having difficulty in dealing with the affects of a spouse, son, brother, uncle etc. being a Police Officer. Read the Emotional Survival for Law Enforcement book and wanted to hear from anyone dealing with these unique and amazing men and women when the affects of the job tear them apart along with everyone who loves them dearly. ANY input would be greatly appreciated !!!! Ken Deane, you will always be in my prayers and my heart , as will your family and all your great friends that are better people for having you in their lives ......ever safe.. ever peaceful.. you will be on my watch ...... Thanks to ALL of you for a job well done with the obstacles they place in front of you daily to keep you from doing what you love best......BEING A GREAT COP !! Don't be too proud to seek support ....we are all behind you 150 % . Stay safe, physically and mentally. Come home to the ones you love, with love.

I just want to say thank you to all police officers for dedicating yourselves to protecting our communities. I am a young father of two girls aged 6-8, and I hate the thought of seeing them grow up in the presence of some of todays youth. I have decided to try and make a difference in the community, and have registered for my COR. My test date is 08/18/08, at the police college in Aylmer, ON. Once I get the certificate, I will proudly apply to the O.P.P.I have always dreamed of becoming a police officer, but have never been in a position to be able to act on my dream. At 31 years of age, and 10 years with the same company, I just decided to go for it! I have allot to offer any policing agency, and I will not give up on my dream.

It's been almost a decade since my Dad passed. He was Sgt. Andy Templar. He was a great guy. He always had his office door open to the public and he welcomed visitors into his detachment. He would often "hold court" in his office with local folks and bash things out over coffee ( household disputes, neighbour problems, kids getting out of control, etc.), and at the end they all were able to come to some kind of resolution, and everyone walked away satisfied. My Dad was an "old school" type of cop, and he always made sure that you knew that he was the law. If you played nice with him he played nice with you. If you didn't play nice, well........ My Dad loved the bush, he loved to hunt, fish and be outside as much as possible. In fact, it was common knowledge that in the fall he would be "protecting wildlife". If you knew him, you know what that meant. He was generous with his time, patient, smart as hell and he will be missed forever by all that knew him. God bless you dad.

I am trying to contact friends of mine called George and Ena Shipley. George was in the police in Niagra Falls in Canada. They have two children (grown up now) Wendy and Scott. They emigrated to Canada in 1968 or there abouts!! Ena's brother Alex Gray and his wife joined them in the 1970s after Ena's Mother died. I have tried every site I know of to try and catch up with them. My husband was in the Forces and we moved around a lot and eventually lost touch. I would dearly love to be in touch with them again. We were friends since school and I was bridesmaid at their wedding which I think was 1961! I do hope someone knows of them or that they or someone related to them reads this. Re: Supreme Court Ruling (Canine searches) (Russ Cassidy, from Canada) wrote: OK... now we have another good reason why judges should be elected... Am I surprised by the ruling? not at all! A few antique Trudeau era liberal appointed judges who have police security afforded them every day, can decide the rights of the criminal must take priority over what is right for the majority of lawful citizens who have to walk the streets alone. Next time your in trouble don't call the cops, call the Supreme Court and let a judge come over and arrest the drug dealer that has just invaded your home... Hello Mr. Harper... I am definitely in agreement with those who change that the justice system needs to be changed to help protect the victims and their families instead of the criminals as is the present case. I am very disappointed with the Judicial System in Canada. We protect the criminals and forget the victims. I think the young offenders act should be taken away. Don't tell me that a 13 or even 14 year olds don't know right from wrong. Sure there is peer pressure, I remember grade school and highschool, still if you do the crime you do the time period. If we let them get away with it at that age the next thing you know they are the criminals that the police have to keep looking for and putting back behind bars, just so that a judge can put them right back on the streets. Its like our jails have a revolving door. The police can only do so much. Our system has to change because the criminals know they will get away again and again. I commend all that serve in the Police Force be it home or away, God Bless you all.

I hate to say it but our Judges are a joke. It seems to me that they have lost their common sense when it comes to protecting criminals when they should be protecting the citizens of Canada against criminals. As far as I am concerned a criminal loses all his rights when he commits a crime so judges should in no way make their life any easier. It is time to bring back capital punishment to protect the law abiding citizens of our country against murderers who have no respect for the law .

It has deffinately been a dream for me since I've been 6 years old. I'm finally going to go through with my dream! Not just yet though, I always think now and again if I want to work in the city or in a small town. But anyways. I'm going to be taking my course in Sudbury Ontario, that's if I don't find the Academy in Guelph. (lol) I just wanted to say how happy I was of everyone, and knowing that I'm not already what half of these people are right now burns me, but don't worry, I'll fullfill my dream within the next 2 years. :) Keep up the good work!
